Based on Robert Harris’ 2016 novel Conclave

Tale

When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secret and ancient events: the election of a new Pope. He finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Cardinal Benítez delivers his decisive speech in Spanish. It’s a bit of a stretch to think that all the other cardinals can easily understand him.

« Only those who do not seek power are qualified to exercise it, » Plato

Sister Agnes: Although we sisters are meant to be invisible, God has nevertheless given us eyes and ears. The Catholic Church is teeming with mysteries, from the virgin birth to transubstantiation, but rarely do you witness a mystery that can be solved. « Conclave, » a thriller about the fictional election of a pope, reveals more about the ambitions of many of the « papabili » (those qualified to be pope) than about doctrine. The Curia is a strange place where cardinals reside and ambition is as rampant as vice, jealousy, bigotry and lies. Dean Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is almost devoid of ambition (see Plato’s proverb above).

With certainty, you don’t need faith, » he preaches

Consequently, the rumors of ambition come to him and thus to us. Sometimes the machinations seem to come straight from our current presidential election, where we hear even more rumors and outright malice as November approaches.Lawrence, a dignified man with scruples, explains why his own doubts are characteristic of emerging wisdom: « Faith is a living thing, for it goes hand in hand with doubt. « Let’s elect a pope who doubts. » Because Lawrence, a candidate who bets on certainty, as pope will set the institution back without keeping it fresh and contemporary. Director Edgar Berger guides with a steady hand the intimacies kept secret from the crowds waiting for the smoke of the Vatican to announce a new pope.

Nuns can be relied upon, however, especially Sister Agnes (Isabella Rossellini), who just watches and intervenes when necessary

Such secrecy lends itself to a good thriller, whose secrecy is nectar for the audience, who can claim to be privy to everything. Alongside the clues and deliberations, we see the human drama of competing for the big prize, and not exactly the best candidates. After a revelation or two, things settle down to what they are: just a good thriller, with the College of Cardinals providing juicy bad guys. Not all popes have been perfectly holy: think of Pope John Paul’s cover-up of sexual abuse cases and Pope Benedict XVI, who used to be a Hitler Youth.

Or read Dan Brown’s Illuminati

In this blatantly fictional conclave, however, the cardinals can choose a man who « sins and asks for forgiveness. » Or a platonic choice that also entails a lack of ambition. And a certain amount of doubt.
